The Trouble With Carbon Removal Technologies

To pull temperatures back down after an overshoot, humanity has to actively suck carbon out of the air on an industrial scale. This is known as Carbon Dioxide Removal, or CDR. Think massive direct-air capture plants, aggressive reforestation, and untested geoengineering concepts.

Here is the bitter truth: relying on future carbon removal is a massive gamble. Many of these technologies are completely unproven at the scale required. Even the most optimistic projections suggest CDR will only lower global temperatures by a few tenths of a degree this century.

Treating carbon removal as a safety net for bad behavior today is a recipe for disaster. If we use CDR as an excuse to keep burning fossil fuels now, the peak will climb too high for technology to ever rescue us.
