We get breathless updates about radar tracks ending abruptly near the Bimini chain, speculation about squalls over the Gulf Stream, and a quiet acceptance that flying over water in a small piston twin is inherently a gamble.

That perspective misses the structural rot in how general aviation evaluates risk, training, and operational pressure. When a family vanishes en route from the islands to the mainland, the root cause is rarely a sudden stroke of bad luck. It is a compounding chain of systemic failures disguised as a pilot choice.

Real-time global positioning telemetry should be mandatory for any aircraft crossing open water. If you can afford the fuel to fly to the Bahamas, you can afford an independent satellite tracker that transmits your position until the moment the circuit breaker pops or the hull hits the water.

Second, re-engineer how we train instrument-rated private pilots. The focus must shift away from memorizing VOR intersections to hard-nosed risk mitigation, fatigue management, and psychological assertiveness against mission creep.

Third, stop treating private aviation like driving a sedan. It is an industrial-grade transport system operated by amateurs. Until we bridge that gap with professional standards, mandatory safety equipment, and a culture that celebrates turning back, families will keep disappearing into the sea while the experts blame the weather.
